For the first time, the "Sony Ericsson Championships" tennis tournament takes place in the booming desert city of Doha. In order to meet the requirements of the WTA championships, the tennis courts and facilities, which had been constructed in 2006, had to be substantially extended. The extension of the three grandstands for an additional 3,500 spectators, twelve commentator boxes and added height to the stands had to be carried out under sometimes boiling hot conditions, with peak temperatures of 50 degree Celsius and a relative humidity of up to 90 percent, a real challenge for man and materials. The grandstands, with their 10 mm thick Formboard "top pine" facade panels, were constructed by NÜSSLI - Hüttwilen and abut the existing facilities on three sides, with an overall height of 30 m. The contractor succeeded in installing the 700 tonnes of building components and 12,000 sqm of "Formboard top pine" facade panels in just three weeks under the desert sun, reliably meeting the deadline.
